Ruth Conlon Oates (Sligo, Co. Sligo), a student at Mercy College, has volunteered her time across a myriad of projects in her community including teaching self-defence and kick boxing to 4- to 10-year-old children and coaching first-year football after school. During these experiences, Ruth encourages younger students to take part in sports to promote physical and mental wellbeing.

Ruth also volunteers with St Vincent De Paul and the North West Simon Community. She has actively used her entrepreneurial skills to design and sell a product and donate those proceeds to charity. Ruth believes that you get back what you give out and, if you ignite happiness, help and kindness, you will receive the same back.

“Ruth has demonstrated exceptional service of an altruistic nature for the greater good of her community and Mercy College through her fundraising activities and voluntary participation in community organisations,” says Anne Gorby of Mercy College. She is a quiet, yet confident leader and a very good team player. In Mercy College we believe that Ruth is an outstanding young volunteer and she epitomises what community spirit should be all about.”
