David Giles (Bandon, Co. Cork), a student at Ardscoil Ui Urmoltaigh, has volunteered at St. Michael’s Centre for the Elderly, Marymount Hospice and Bushmount Nursing Home in Clonakilty. While volunteering, David often provides musical entertainment.

As chairperson of Newcestown Foróige and the 2017 Big Breakfast Event, David helped raise €2,800 for local charities. David is also heavily involved in the organisation of the 5K Breast Cancer Fun Run, which raises awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Ireland. David is inspired by the volunteer work he sees in his local community and hopes to work in an area where he can help people in society directly. He has also dedicated time to researching ways to improve social issues across Ireland such as isolation among the elderly and resilience and mental health among his peers.

“David is actively involved in his community and has a passion for youth advocacy, democracy and civic participation,” explains Sarah Haslam, Training, Learning & Development Manager at Foróige. “Through this involvement in Foróige in Cork, David has led a number of fundraising projects which have benefited the local community hospital and breast cancer research. David has shown huge commitment to his club and has been a key driver in his success and growth to date.”
